Hi; I would like to change the names for the menu launcher that comes pre-set on my upper panel. Currently I have "Applications Places System". This launcher takes up 2.5" on my upper panel. I would like to change the headings to "Apps Places Sys". That would probably give me 1/2 to 3/4 inches of extra panel space. Is there anyway I can safely do this without destroying any functions of the menu? Is there a way to add menu headings to my gconf-editor so that the headings can be controlled from there?

I recently installed Gnome 2.14.0 via fink under Mac OSX (Tiger). I've used gnome for many years under various Linux distros. My .xinitrc looks like this: # $Id: xinitrc,v 1.3 2004/06/11 04:37:23 jharper Exp $ userresources=$HOME/.Xresources usermodmap=$HOME/.Xmodmap sysresources=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xresources sysmodmap=/etc/X11/xinit/.Xmodmap # merge in defaults and keymaps if [ -f "$sysresources" ]; then xrdb -merge "$sysresources" fi if [ -f "$sysmodmap" ]; then xmodmap "$sysmodmap" fi if [ -f "$userresources" ]; then xrdb -merge "$userresources" fi if [ -f "$usermodmap" ]; then xmodmap "$usermodmap" fi # start the window manager quartz-wm --only-proxy & metacity & #start GNOME source /sw/bin/init.sh exec /sw/bin/gnome-session I'm not sure how to integrate applications into the gnome desktop environment eg. I have gedit and gnome terminal in /sw/bin (fink put them there), they open fine from a Mac terminal but how do I integrate them into "Applications" in the top menu bar.....a

I noticed that in 2.20.0 the display colors of various parts of windows can be controlled that are/can not in 2.16.0. Can anyone tell me where the color controls for the panels in the windows are set? (I'm guessing that they're in a file somewhere....) I really hate the gray on my CentOS 5.1 box and really like the color controls in 2.20.0 (on my work FC8 box). In the alternative, is there a way to get 2.20.0 for a distro that does not include it (other than the "demo" CD - not an acceptable method)? Thanks. mhr

:-) I'm using GNOME 2.20. under Gentoo. I'd like to use a rather light wallpaper for my desktop. Unfortunately I can hardly see the desktop icon descriptions cause those are white. I can't find any way of changing the font color for those items. I'd really appreciate your help. Best regards, Marek

Hi, I have already posted this question to the Distro support forum without any luck. I am running Centos 5.0 with all current updates (Therefore 5.1 I assume) with the full gnome desktop and most options instlled. Nautilus reports as Version 2.16.2 I have never found that the Search function in Nautilus (ctrl F or button) works as I would expect. It will usually find a file in the current directory with a matching name - but will not find any files in subdirectories, unless they have been found recently. When it doesn't find anything it sits there with the "busy" mouse pointer for ever - or at least until I click "stop". I have done some google research - and the ubuntu community describe similar problem behaviour when "tracker" and/or "indexing" is disabled. I haven't found any way to disable or enable either tracker or Indexing - so I assume these are not part of the Centos distribution. Can anyone throw any light on this problem? Am I misinterpreting how the search should behave? Have I

I have a strange problem with Gnome 2.22. When I type Alt-Tab, all open windows blink, and the program on top is still on top.

Hallöchen! I'd like to refer to the Ubuntu bug . My scenario is as follows: I use Gajim as my IM client. It is configured to show small windows in the lower right corner when some buddy has become online. Nice feature. However, most of the time, I use Emacs, and even worse, I use it in full-screen mode. This means that those Gajim notifications are not shown at all. I understand that this suppression may be good while watching a movie in full-screen mode but in my case, it is totally superfluous. Okay, the Ubuntu people consider this unimportant. On the other hand, I don't even have real confirmation that the above bug has anything to do with my problem. So, can anybody here tell me a workaround for my issue? It may well be a dirty and/or complicated workaround, but this bahaviour has gotten more and more annoying to me over the last months. Thank you! Tschö, Torsten.

I'm a newbie to both FreeBSD and Gnome. I installed FreeBSD 7 and installed and configured Gnome 2.22. Everything is working fine except that my mouse does not work. I have a USB mouse with a wheel. The mouse works fine in the FreeBSD console but no luck with Gnome. I've research the question and the answer is always to edit the Xorg, XFree86 or X11 configuration files which I cannot find anywhere on my FreeBSD install. I'm about to give up...please if someone knows where I can configure my mouse I need your help. Thank you! Ian

At work I use Synegy with the Solaris Java Desktop System (essentially Gnome-something, maybe 2.6.1?) on a pair of machines. Synergy works well, allowing me to type and mouse on either machines' displays using a single keyboard and mouse. I recently enabled Gnome's typing monitor (version 2.6.1 - seems kind of old?). Synergy doesn't pass the necessary events back and forth to allow both typing monitors to activate. Consequently, when the typing monitor locks my screen it only locks my primary display (the one with the synergy server's keyboard and mouse). The secondary display (the "client" in synergy's nomenclature) remains unlocked. Is this a known issue? Is there a fix or workaround? Is it maybe fixed in a later version? I asked on the Synergy discussion forum on SourceForge but received no response. I was hoping someone here could shed a little light on the topic. Thanks,

Is there a particular GNOME component responsible for changing the default mouse cursor when the Gtk/CursorTheme* xsettings change? I've looked at the code for gnome-control-center and gnome-settings-daemon; all they do is change the xsettings when the user changes the theme, but it only works properly in a full GNOME environment. I've updated ROX-Session to use the Gtk/CursorTheme* xsettings, but it doesn't work on the default cursor shape. It only works on shapes such as the insert caret, pointing hand (as used for URLs etc) and window borders (provided the winodw manager uses GTK). The standard pointer shape remains unaffected. Even if I disable ROX-Session's xsettings manager and use gnome-settings-daemon I get the same problem, so I'm deducing there's something else in GNOME that's responsible for the standard pointer. Does anyone know about this?

I need to write a script that registers a service to be started when the user logs into their system. Depending on the version of Gnome they are using I need to either modify: $HOME/.gnome2/session-manual or put something in: $HOME/.config/autostart/ What I am trying to determine is which version of Gnome switched from .gnome2/session-manual to .config/autostart/. Does anyone happen to know? Chris
