Re: GNOME Summary for 30th March to 19th April

Red Hat 8.0 + is pretty close to this. :) I pendled in on Red Hat after years of experience with SuSE, Mandrake, Debian and Gentoo.

While the Red Hat Desktop is not really marketed as "for average home users" yet, I kinda like this fact because it shows a sense for reality at Red Hat. The reality is, that it simply is _not_ ready yet, even though it's getting closer. But it's already a very interesting system for corporate usage and especially for students/freaks.

Mandrake 9.1 seems to be pretty good too (my father is using it and it looks and works nice. He is using Gnome of course), though I think that Red Hat puts more professional, commercial-quality polish into the desktop while Mandrake provides more bells and whistles (sometimes not that polished but cool to have).

I rather doubt that a community distribution would do much to improve the situation (compared to Red Hat/Mandrake) because exactly this kind of commercial polish and support seems to be very important to get average home users as clients.

Not trying to discourage you, just stating my doubts. :)
