If you're used to running Windows, you can think of Synaptic as a sort of super-dooper, turbocharged, steroid-munching version of the "Add / Remove Software" control panel. Except that it would be rude to even think about comparing them since there's a world more sophistication in Synaptic.

Synaptic Made Me Believe in Apt Get

And my system had hummed ever since. I gave up on doing soure installs and started (religiously) building my own rpm's just so I don't break this wonderful package management system.

I love being able to upgrade without the hassle of tracking down dependencies, just fire it up, update my package list and I am off to the races. RH is finally wising up to this and making up2date compatible with apt, so I can get the latest security patches from my vendor AND the wonderfulness of Nyquist's gnome packages all from one tool.
