xrestop - go after your application's bloat...

FreeDesktop.org
FreeDesktop.org

Mathew Allum has written a very useful utility for looking
at the resource usage of applications using the X server,
using the Xres extension written by Mark Vojkovich.
While not perfect, it will give you insight into the
resources (bloat) your application is maintaining on your
behalf.

Xrestop can be found at:
http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/xrestop

A screenshot and how to download xrestop is on that page.

Some commonly used applications are using
(wasting) an amazing amount of resources, for no
apparent benefit. Xmms is using > 400 windows
and wasting 10 megabytes is surprising,
just to name one "interesting" result.

We should have written this utility 15 years ago. Better late than never, I suppose....

Time for a New Year's Resolution: to
put ourselves and our applications on diets.

Re: need something like that for X traffic

The problem I have with your post is that you're so vague with your statements as to have said virtually nothing. Anecdotes regarding the philosophy of Mozilla developers aside, what have you stated about the nature of the inefficiencies you believe to exist? Without specific details about what you're talking about, it's hard to address claims regarding the equal value of these unspoken design decisions to both high-latency and/or low-throughput and low-latency high-throughput interfaces. There are certainly cases where optimizing for high-latency interfaces is not beneficial for low-latency interfaces, and without knowledge of specifically what you're claiming it's difficult to address whether or not it happens to be one of them.
