NewsForge has a nice review of Rhythmbox, the popular GNOME music player and manager. If you don't know Rhythmbox already read the article and maybe it will get you interested in trying it out.

We should put the following answer in some FAQ, the question comes up quite often :)

GStreamer and the applications using it have never tried to use hacks to improve sound but instead relied on working with the Linux kernel guys to make Linux schedule the application correctly.

The good news is that a recent Linux kernel generally has no problems with Rhythmbox even during heavy disk IO and CPU load. I'm using 2.6 and 2.4 kernels and I did extensive testing to make sure there are no general issues left.

The bad news is that older kernels and bad drivers can still screw up your experience quite a bit.
