I think that GConf is a cool thing since it centralizes configuration inforamtion at one place. The only downside is its current editor.

A configuration editor should enable a very convenient and easily understandable way of advanced configuring.

name/value or gnome browser exec epiphany nremote [] needs_term [] just isn't the way to accomplish this.

You could then have an "advanced settings..." menu item in each application that takes use of gconf and that would invoke the editor.(the convenient one ;)
