In light of the recent Mono 1.0 release there is a lot of coverage on Novell and Mono lately. NewsForge recently talked with Erik Dasque, the senior project leader for Mono, about the release of 1.0, the controversy and criticisms encountered along the way, and the plans for the future, while Miguel de Icaza spoke to CNET News.com shortly before the company began shipping Mono version 1.0. Elsewhere, InfoWorld posted an article about the "new face" of Novell.

Re: More on Mono, Novell

Well, because those files are CLI shared files and NOT regular using ELF files. So as a way for people to be able to tell the difference they kept the .exe and the .dll extension. Also, that way those same files work seamlessly on windows, macosx, etc...

Last, it also makes it easier for unix/linux file browsers (nautilus and konqurer) to detect those files if they have an extension rather then by sniffing it.

Overall, though, the users don't really see the .exe extensions anyway for any program installed properly.
