I was getting issues like that too. It seemed the DNS lookups were timing out, so I added the IP addresses of all the servers it tries to connect to /etc/hosts so that lookup of them would be instantaneous.

207.46.104.20 messenger.hotmail.com

65.54.179.228 nexus.passport.com

65.54.183.192 loginnet.passport.com

are the three that make it work for me.
