Java Desktop System for Solaris x86 Released

Sun Microsystems
Sun Microsystems

It hasn't had a great deal of publicity yet, but Sun released its first version of the Java Desktop System for Solaris last week-- specifically, for Solaris 9 x86 on the new Java Workstations (although it will work on other S9 x86 machines too).Although nominally called JDS version 2 (to coincide with the version number of Sun's most recent Linux-based JDS release), it offers some improvements over its Linux sibling, not least from its foundations in the more recent GNOME 2.6.

JDS for Solaris 9 x86 is available as a web download or media kit, at the promotional price (until December 2004) of $50 for individual licences.

Release dates for the forthcoming JDS v3 on Solaris SPARC, x86 and Linux have not yet been announced.
