GNOME

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, the GNOME development branch is BACK
IN ACTION! This is our first of our 2.9 development series releases, working

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!
--------------------------

This release is a snapshot of development code. Although it is buildable and
usable, it is primarily intended for testing and hacking purposes. Like the
good old days of Linux kernel development, GNOME uses odd minor version
numbers to indicate development status. Please check the 2.9 start page for
more information:

Happy testing!

GTK Filedialog

This should be fixed to include a text field, you should also support filename completion in it, aswell as "move to the file that begins with abc" in the list itself.

Currently it's really annoying since you have to manually find the files with no help at all from gtk

I agree , filename completion

I agree , filename completion is very important to find files , specially when the folder has many files .

Ctrl+L

Ctrl+L is great for avoiding having to middle click thru a deep folder structure, but it's only available when you are in a nautilus window. How about having it the desktop itself and the panels are responsive to Ctrl+L. That way you wouldn't have to open a nautilus window simply to be able to Ctrl+L and open the directory you really wanted to be looking at.

RE: Ctrl+L

An alternative to 'Ctrl+L' is pressing 'alt+f2'. This brings up the 'Run Application' dialog, but it also acts like the "Open Location" dialog. Just type in a path and press enter to open it. The good thing about 'alt+f2' is that you can use it from any application, not just the desktop. Hope that helps :)

Jimmy

thanks, never realized that.

thanks, never realized that.

seconds this

I second this. Would save a LOT of clicking.

Permissions

Hi

I just downloaded a new splash.png from art.gnome.org and saved it on my desktop. Dragging the file into a /usr/share/pixmaps/splash nautilus window i'm just told that "not enough permissions", and that's cool.

What could be cooler (apart from ice-cold) is: detect the user is trying to access a system folder and ask him if he has the rights to do so via gksu.

I know splash images can be put into the home directory, that's not my point here, the point is granting the superuser access to system folders instead of dying with an error message and forcing him to fire up the terminal. I guess security is a non issue here, since we're using gksu elsewhere. Ubuntu hoary here.

apropos GNOME vs KDE: I'm a long time KDE power user AND i'm also loving the simplicity of gnome2.8, both are wonderful examples of what the community can create and i'm happy i can appreciate both of them. period

random wishes, sorry if they're already known bugs/wishes:

* saving a png to the desktop puts it in strange off-grid places, frequently the filename is even offscreen too!
* spatial nautilus is fun, but why doesn't navigational nautilus remember *any* preference? I'm _always_ turning off that sidebar and resizing orizontally its window!
* why gnome-terminal doesn't remember geometry/position either? i'd prefer a somewhat "spatial" approach for it too
* maybe all of these spatial issues could be solved by making metacity support those attributes and enabling them by default? (but that would mean duplication of efforts when it comes to spatial nautilus windows)
* every new gnome release, i keep checking the gconf key "metacity application based", and i'm always frustrated hoping they're coding in that direction

thanks for making gnome happen!

PS: I'm playing with basilisk2 and ...man MacOS 7.5.3 already rocked!

It will be more cool if GNOME

It will be more cool if GNOME include a splash changer program, X icon changer program and ESPECIALLY I want a widget color changing, I hate staying with Grey all the time

Two feature proposals

The bookmarks-pane from the new file-chooser is really great, so why not use it in more places?
There was a proposal to put it as a sidebar in every nautiluswindow, but since that would be a great waste of space, why not embed it in a dropdown menu to the panel?

A minor, but tasty, improvement would be the return of the top-panles rounded edges from pre-2.4. Maybe as a more generic "Round outer edges"-option.

Thanks for a really great desktop!

Please, please, please. I kno

Please, please, please. I know it's on the edge of a bloat feature but so many applications fail to preserve their {position/size/on top} settings that the option to save them should be included right into the desktop. The first example that comes to my mind are the media player guis. Of course, there's absolutely no need to bloat the thing like KDE did, that's scary and useless, they managed to make the feature unusable.

Windows positions. . .

I agree. As a self confessed "neat freak" the only thing that bothers me about using Gnome at the moment is the fact that I find myself repeatedly resizing and positioning windows to suit the way I would like to work.

I don't consider this to be a bloat issue but a usability feature. This feature used to be available in sawfish/mill. (Perhaps it still is).

I do recall reading a comment from Havoc Pennington on this matter stating that it is not so much a Metacity issue, more that applications need to be made session aware. I am not a coder so I really do not understand this.

The only other thing that I would like to see returned to Gnome is menu editing. Manually editing .desktop files or using ///applications in Nautilus is not user friendly.

I love Gnome to bits, have been using it since I started using Linux, admittedly I have tried other environments but always come home to Gnome.

Windows positions on dual monitors...

I'm running a dual monitor system with one buffer, which accomplishes everything I need. But I spend so much time repositioning windows when I work with programs like the GIMP, and anything else with breakout menus. In addition, I dislike having all of the alert boxes and such opening right in the middle of the field of view, I get a nice 50/50 split.
Obviously, being able to store position and size would be a great feature, and that goes double for us dualies.

Syncronization and less bloat =)

What i really need is a bluetooth enabled (syncml capable) syncing system that is integrated in gnome. You alŕeady have the pilot thingies, make it generic and talk to the MultiSync ppl. (Ie, they do a great job but f.ex. you can't sync evolution 2 now since they have to write a new plugin)

I also agree with speed issues, esp re 'eyecandy rendering'... But also, less bloat =).

Re: Syncronization and less bloat =)

> you can't sync evolution 2 now since they have to write a new plugin
latest multysinc has evolution2, ldap , konntact plugins ... they are avalaible in debian sid

> latest multysinc has evolut

> latest multysinc has evolution2, ldap , konntact plugins ... they are avalaible in debian sid

Oh? where?

apt-cache search multisync |grep evolution
libmultisync-plugin-evolution - Ximian Evolution plugin for MultiSync

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libmultisync-plugin-evolution: Depends: evolution (< 1.5) but 2.0.2-3 is to be installed

I just had to reply to my own

I just had to reply to my own posting.

From what i read on the multisync ml when i posted that message, the evolution2 plugin wasn't finished. And why does gnome have a "pilot" only sync mechanism? It could be expanded to sync just about anything. To me it's just plain stupid...

crashed applets stop starting up of next Gnome session

Hello,

Gnome is very nice and I like it but there is a big problem imho:

If I try an applet which crashes (for instance sticky notes on my machine) I can't restart my Gnome session. I.e. at next startup I get always the mesasge "can't start sticky...". That's not the problem but after clicking "no restart it" at startup of next session the splash screen does not disappear and logout does not work. It seems that the sessions hangs somewhere. Finally the panel did not start...

After removing some entries in the hidden settings dirs I could start Gnome normally. Fortunately I had not removed too much of my settings. But what can do a newbie?

cu, Tilo

Crashed Gnome sessions can do that.

Kill the remaining servers (gconfd, etc.) and remove session locks from /tmp (I don't know wich offhand, someone can fill in?).

Gnome Terminal Improvement

Hi,

Just switched to 2.8.1 a few days ago from KDE. Gnome Terminal is a good start but really not on par with Konsole.

Here are a few examples:

- window position and size should be included into profiles and should be automatically saved
- tab position should be a choice (Up, Down, Left, Right)
- tab should be a fixed size (even when containing path) which shoud be choosable into profile
- tab navigation should be rotate automatically
- buffering (scrolling) should have a profile option for beffering ALL
- window refresh is slow when using transparency

etc....

Please improve it as Terminal is one of the first things users see and use.

Thank you for your good work.

Fabrice

RE: Gnome Terminal Improvement

I don't want tab navigation to rotate automatically

Gnome Terminal Improvements?

Frankly, I don't want Gnome terminal to be "on a par" with Konsole. Apparently, neither do the maintainers.

Why?

http://www106.pair.com/rhp/free-software-ui.html

You've listed a whole pile of pointless configuration options rather than just trying to get the behaviour to Just Work.

But it's your reason that really stands out as pointless:

"Please improve it as Terminal is one of the first things users see and use."

Really? Yuck. Maybe in KDE, but in GNOME the hope is that the terminal will be the last thing users see and use.

Gnome terminal improvements

Distros are forcing X-windows on us. Get over it and let Terminal improvements proceed.

Gnome Terminal Improvements?

I would like the maintener(s) to respond on his/their own first.

What I give is a user perception. I am a developer and think Gnome Terminal is quite difficult to use and that it could be enhanced.

I am also a MacOSX, Windoz user and I am using a lot terminals in my work so I can compare their ease of use.

"GNOME the hope is that the terminal will be the last thing users see and use."

This is a non sense today and seems that you are a "All GUI" zealot. Just look at MacOS9 / MacOSX transition: people were surprised about the brand new Terminal but forced to admit that it was more than useful to have it.

"You've listed a whole pile of pointless configuration options rather than just trying to get the behaviour to Just Work."

Sorry but my perception was that I had to adapt to Gnome Terminal instead of Gnome Terminal adapting to me. I have tried to use it and it seems a bit too minimalistic in terms of configuration. I dont want all Kdeish king of myriad of options. I just want the *basic* configuration options that can make my life and work better.

So I am fully agree with: http://www106.pair.com/rhp/free-software-ui.html

In fact there is a difference between "minimalistic" configuration options & "usefull" ones.

For other posts:

no CTRL+PGDOWN/PGUP does not rotate terminals: when the last is selected it does not go back to the first (this is the difference between "rotate" and "change")

Fabrice

Terminal usability

"What I give is a user perception. I am a developer"

You contradict yourself.

You forgot one thing!

shift+left or right key lets you jump between shells in Konsole.

Now that you make the switch I was wondering if you know any good programs like cervisia and kompare in gnome?

Meld is a pretty good replace

Meld is a pretty good replacements for thsoe programs on gnome. Its not as powerful as cervisa though

Meld is a pretty good replace

Yes, this one is very nice.

Fabrice

Try Ctrl+PageUp/PageDown.

Try Ctrl+PageUp/PageDown.

this should be in all noteboo

this should be in all notebook and mdi apps. the gedit behavior of alt+1-9 (with no way that i can see of jumping to 10+) is bad. i should file a gtk+ bug report on this...

consistency is key!

Cervisia replacement

Hello,

As far as I know there is no usable gnome cvs client. But I can recommend LinCVS, which is built on top of Qt but works under Gnome of course. See http://www.lincvs.org for more informations.

cu, Tilo

Nautilus-cvs soon

There is support in nautilus now for plugins. The outline of CVS a plugin has existed for months, but didn't actually perform CVS commands - it just allowed you to view the status. I have recently sent a patch to the maintainer (Dave Camp) that adds enough functionality to make it useful.

With this plugin, you will be able to do most of the main CVS actions entirely inside the file manager.

Feature list for version 2.10

Cannot find full list of feature planned for version 2.10. Can anybody help me? :)

there's not such a thing in t

there's not such a thing in the gnome community. There are long term goals, but that's all, no specific "feature set". jdub asked for maintainers to provide a small description on where they would aim their work for 2.10 before branching, but not a lot of answers there :-/

UI Research

Why not have a look around for UI researchers and what projects they are doing for considering the inclusion in GNOME?

For eg.,
http://www.patrickbaudisch.com/projects/index.html

Sridhar R - http://livejournal.com/~sridharinfinity

This feature seems to be a go

This feature seems to be a good idea for windows users only.
With Gnome, we use to have many desktops to group windows into project.

New GAIM Features

I want a feature that let ppl choose their presence status b4 login for both Yahoo and MSN

I think that...

I think that gaim is not part of the gnome proyect, is it?

--
Jespa

This is the job of gaim, no

This is the job of gaim, not gnome.

Size for gnome cd burner

Can we see the total size of the project in gnome-cd-burner, including the folder and sub folder ?
With the cd/dvd size detection, it would be great.

And a alow overburn option, please ?

Thanks for this wonderful gnome.

not sure right now but I thin

not sure right now but I think that if you go to the gconf editor you will see an option to enable Overburn under nautilus cd burner.

Overburn???

And what about the AudioCD suport?
I can't write AudioCD!!!

Audio support doesn't make se

Audio support doesn't make sense in Nautilus. The plan was to have this support eventually integrated into Rhythmbox like it is in iTunes on Mac OS X.

Why would in not make sense?

Why would in not make sense? Nautilus is a lot more than a file manager in many other ways. It actually makes little sense not to be able to handle audio cds as cd-roms as well (ripping and burning by drag'n'drop).

New pure GNOME CD Writer program

Why we still have to use K3B on our GNOME? Can't some ppl out there write a pure GTK2 program that DON'T base on any cdwrite command program? I mean writting a new lib.

New pure GNOME CD Writer program

Look at gnomefiles.org
there is very cool early stage of GnomeBaker CD burning tool.
Help it's developer (as I do) in debugging.

Bednar

libburn

Already have a lib. Contribute to that and improve it rather than make a new one. http://icculus.org/burn/

Check out this thread on debian-devel. It has a good overview of the current state of burn stuff and some good recomendations on what the community should do.

Drag and Drop data from any GNOME to each other

I also want a function top drop, drag or manipulate the data b/w GNOME programs, for example: you can drag the calculated number in GNOME Calculator to GNOME Editor and vice-versa.

Drag shortcut to main menu

I want ablity to drag and drop the shortcut from anywhere to the Main Menu without going via Entire Menu -> Add launcher ...

Open a Nautilus browser windo

Open a Nautilus browser window, and enter applications:/// in the Location bar. You'll be able to drag and drop normally into here.

I think this feature needs to be better-documented.
