Ask questions to the candidates running for the GNOME Foundation elections

Gnome Foundation
Gnome Foundation

The official list of candidates running for the elections will be known next week. Before the vote occurs, a debate will happen. We usually send questions to the candidates to launch the debate. If you want to see some discussion about what is important to you, here's your chance to make it happen! Of course, you'll still be able to directly ask questions to the candidates by posting them on foundation-list.

Please ask one question per post (and no more). The 10 best questions will be selected and sent to the candidates. You may want to look at the questions from previous elections, at the GNOME Foundation charter and at this overview of the board.

Note that being on the board of the GNOME Foundation is not a technical job, so please try to avoid posting questions about software development.

The answer I need to know is:

How can you, as a candidate take yourself seriously when you are running against the awesome, mighty and benevolent Dom Lachowicz. And why do you expect people to vote for you when it is obvious that you don't even know how to respect superior individuals (like Dom in this case) by simply letting him control the entirety of the foundation with an iron fist of justice.

P.s. Vote 1 Dom Lachowicz

What does he think are gnome's advantages and weaknesses ?

Role of the Foundation Board

Judging from the comments posted here, it seems as though most people are confused about the purpose of the GNOME Foundation and its board. How will you, as a member of the board, try to clear up confusion and outline a clear direction and purpose for the Foundation?

relax dependency on GConf by Anonymous George

OT but I'll bite

While this is outside of the scope of the foundation, why would gnome want to move away from gconf, now that most apps are using it?

Usability

What do you think is the largest barrier to usability in the
GNOME desktop right now and what are your plans to address it?

I second this one.

What has gnome achieved and what is still difficult for a newcomer.

Barbara Walters

I need ask a Barbara Walters-style question:
If you could be any animal what would you be?

Get IBM onboard! by Anonymous George

seconded

I actually second this question. Maybe a bit more general: which companies and/or organizations would you like to get involved (e.g. EU, IBM, HP [for real this time], ...)?

sino is NOT stand for China

Who is hell telling you sino is prefix of China? If you do so, that must because you are some silly janpanese.

I think so, sino is a very bad word for Chinese people.

High Level Language Integration

I think now would be as good a time as any to resurrect this old favorite.

A few months back there was all sorts of buzz about the integration of a high-level language into GNOME to allow core components to be written in C# (mono) or Java. (or at least these were the main contenders). Some supported the idea, claiming that it's time GNOME stepped into the modern world of high-level languages. Some were less welcoming, citing patent concerns and questioning the need for a high-level-langugage framework in GNOME. Discuss your stance on this issue. What do you see GNOME doing in the near future to address the lack of high-level-language options?

how is that relevant?

Why would this question be relevant to potential foundation board members? Remember that the foundation board does not set the technical direction of the project -- instead it handles more mundane things like trademark issues, interacting with the advisory board, etc.

You should be able to get a good feel for the kinds of things the foundation board does by reading some of the minutes.

To expand...

To expand on my earlier question: if you see GNOME integrating a high-level-language framework into its core, which do you see as the best candidate (mono, java, or other) and why?

gnome / kde integration

It takes way too much time to start the kde application k3b from a gnome desktop. How do you see gnome and kde integration in a short/distant future ?

It takes a long time as QT ne by Anonymous George

Nothing to do with QT

Kde starts many many daemons and little helper processes when it starts.
Now, when the KDE desktop is loaded this doesn't make any difference, but its noticable when you start a KDE program in another desktop.

Its a KDE "problem" and nothing that GNOME can do to fix.

How does he think it should evolve ?

There sure is a gap between gnome and kde worlds and points of view. There first was some licensing issues, and now technical ones.

One day or another, every user has asked himself whether he would use gnome or kde. In fact, this is one of the first thing a newcomer ask, and obviously there is no right or wrong answer here.

Same thing goes for an organization or a developper.

Both worlds can continue to live separate lives happily, or they can be brought together closer from each other. Whatever happens will mean some trades for every one.

I'd like to hear his feelings about this (old) subject, what cost he thinks we should pay, in one way or another, and why the benefits would be greater than the tradeoff.

Get a clue before posting. Qt by Anonymous George

libc is already loaded into m

libc is already loaded into memory, in a pure Gnome environment QT isn't loaded at all until you come to load a QT app. You get hit with exactly the same effect if you run a Gnome app in an otherwise pure KDE environment. Here's a clue for you learn how things work before attempting to insult people.

Board's job

What do you see as the most important thing that the board accomplishes, and what do you think is the area of the board's activity where you could improve things?

Dave Neary.

Priorities

What is the number one priority for the GNOME project now, in your opinion? What do you think you can do as a board member to work towards that goal?

Dave Neary.

Markets

What do you think is the most important market for GNOMe over the next year or two, and what do you feel you can do to help get GNOME better penetrated into that market?

Dave.

Re: Markets by Anonymous George

Platform or Free Desktop?

Is it more important, in your opinion, that GNOME be a mature platform for third party software developers, or that it be a complete, Free desktop environment?

Dave.

Gnome Office

It is obvious that Gnome is lacking a good Office suite.

Do you think that Gnome must focus on :

a) working hard on gnome office : Gnumeric (already perfect), Abiword and Criawips

b) Integrating OpenOffice.org (as Ximian did)

c) Other answer

with a bit of luck everyone w

with a bit of luck everyone will say a) all this making other apps look like gnome apps is the wrong directon, firefox will never be a gnome app, nor will OOo unless they actually use GTK etc. rather than XUL and whatever the OOo toolkit is.

With all the work being done

With all the work being done on Firefox and Gecko, running the CVS stuff with patches for it actually feels more native then Epiphany to the end user. Work has been ongoing in Firefox to use the native (and new) gnome file chooser, use the GTK stock buttons, and so on, and it already follows the HIG at least decently well... Firefox 1.1 or 1.2 really should feel more native then where Epiphany is today, and hopefully when that happens Firefox will be reconsidered to replace Epiphany. Firefox is becoming a big name in Windows and Linux, and if its included with Gnome it makes everyone's life a whole lot easier, assuming they are following the HIG which they are working torwards.

Feels more native than Epipha

Feels more native than Epiphany? Pass your pipe over here please, I want some.

Integration of applications

What do you think about integration of applications ?

Do you think that Gnome must integrate as much as it can system like IM ?

Performances and old hardware

It's too bad to see that, today, Gnome doesn't run smoothly on not so old hardware. What do you think about it ?

Must Gnome have more features and forget older hardware ? (they can use XFCE). Must Gnome improve performance but keep as much features as possible ? Or must Gnome take some time to optimize as much as it is possible so Gnome can be a perfect replacement for win98 ?

What do you bring to the job?

What unique aspect will you bring to the job?
What cultural influence and new variety will you help add to the board?

Conversely, what technical skills do you bring to the job?
How and why are they important to the job (or not)?

How would you feel about moving to a system of Preferential Voting?

Gnome and external projects...

How do you feel Gnome must be with external project ? And what do you think about Ubuntu ? What sort of cooperation must exist between Gnome and Ubuntu in your opinion ?

mhm.. when it will be fixed? by Anonymous George

> WE (THE USERS) SHOULD VOTE THE MOST URGENT BUGS TO FIX, THEY ARE ALREADY IN BUGZILLA

In general, if something is truly important enough then someone will either find the time or resources to fix it. Developers are not your slaves or employees so they can not be forced to do whatever you want. Adding voting to bugzilla would suggest that they could.
