Wired: music production and composition software for Linux

Gnome Multimedia
Gnome Multimedia

Wired aims to be a professional music production and composition software running on Linux. It is using the GTK+ widget set (via wxWidgets) for better integration with the Gnome desktop.

It brings musicians a complete studio environment to compose and record music without requiring expensive hardware.

Wired supports unlimited Audio/Midi tracks playback and recording, and introduces a Plugin system for instruments and effects. It can also read AKAI CDs and import 18 different Wave formats.

The following instruments and effects are being developed:

Loop sampler, with pitch shifting and time-stretching Beatbox with a new editing concept, to create reallistic and complex drum sequences MIDI controlled sampler, which can read AKAI program and sample files. High-pass, Low-pass and Notch filters Compressor/Limiter Delay.

site down?

Oops, www.bloodshed.net could not be found.

Does anyone have it working?

Does anyone have it working?

If so, which distro? How?

Thanks,
Brenda

I cannot get it to work eithe

I cannot get it to work either. I have sent e-mail to the SoundTouch developer. If I can get the Sound Touch library installed I think Wired will compile. If anybody knows anything about the MMX instruction set and could look at that code and suggest a fix I would appreciate it. If I hear from the developer I will post his fix here.

Installing Port Audio?

Did someone get Port Audio Installed on unix?
The installation instrcutions were sparce.

[root@localhost portaudio_v18_1]# ./configure
: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
[root@localhost portaudio_v18_1]#

How did you do it?
Thanks.

Fedor Core 3 Port Audio

I found a prebuilt portadio for Fedora Core 3 on Fresh RPMS
Ther may be versions built for other distros.

http://heidelberg.freshrpms.net/rpm.html?id=274

They May have the Wx package, too.

Now I can't build AudioTouch

mmx_gcc.cpp: In member function `virtual void TDStretchMMX::overlapStereo(short int*, const short int*) const':

Ouch!

dont worry, same here!

Fedora Core 3 wxGTK Rpm

If you have Fedora Core 3, there is a prebuilt wxGTK rpm here.

Looks great!

I am downloading it now. I am trying not to get too excited about it until I get it running.

[I have to admit: when I first saw the name "Wired" I thought it was about a article I saw somewhere, in which, someone discussed doing professional music recording on the command line. I am glad it's not that.]

The screenies look great!

In my spare time, I have been pesting Linus' people to make the kernel JACK ready. If more EHEM! people would contact the kernel people, requesting that the JACK server run on a unmodified kernel, perhaps it would happen. As you know, they are working on a low-latency version, so it would seem that the only change that would need to be made is the virtual filesystem switch.

Thanks,
Brenda

great

Nothing left to say, just thanks and keep up a good work.

Whow great... :)

Will it have support for LA

Will it have support for LADSPA and plugins, or jack?

That's an oxymoron..

License? Code?

I haven't found any information on the license. Also, CVS on sourceforge is empty. Does anyone know more?

gpl

check download section. there is the licence (GPL) and there is the code.

Very, very cool!

I like the fact that this binds agains GTK (even though through Wx-GTK, it still looks cool). The menus and all non-canvas stuff optically integrate better into GNOME that way and with the added bitmap stuff the screenshots look very, very teriffic. I love it. The best graphic tools all depend on GTK or GNOME already and I am glad to see this happening with Audio tools either. Thank You very much!

And Go Guys, Go! ;-)

Perhaps, you are right.

As excited about the prospect of a Linux Music application, I have to admit that, this isn't Gnome news.

AFAICT it wxGTK only. It would appear that it is not using the x-platform aspect of wx, and is just using it as an abstration.

Also, what's the big deal? It's not like Gnomedesktop is so high traffic that its wasting your time on this app. It's a GTK app that fills a niche that no other GTK app does right now. I find it fairly relavent. If you have such an aversion to wx, you could have seen that from the blurb on the front page and moved on. Like Franky said, "relax".

integration

No matter how great this software is, I have yet to see the first wxWidgets-based application that actually integrates with GNOME (is it even possible to use gnome-vfs etc. with it?)

I doubt that is their main fo

I doubt that is their main focus. Look at the screenshots. It is going more for the approach of most audio applications on Windows and Mac OS with a bitmap-heavy UI. To be honest this is one area where a "good UI" (in the sense of usability, etc.) does not, and may not be able to, exist. Music creation, even on the PC, requires a lot of technical knowledge and technical adjustment. I think we are years away from someone even making a real effort to make an audio creation application that "just works", the closest now is Apple's Garage Band.

Also the requirements do not fit in well with the typical desktop application. For the most part it would not benefit much from current Gnome (as a developer platform) offerings. That said many of the newer Gnome libraries are beginning to address some of these issues, but they are less than stable and feature complete enough to rely on at this point. Some examples include HAL, DBus, and GStreamer.

And while I love GStreamer, it would be difficult to make the next Cubase or even Fruity Loops (ugh) type music production software based on it because of MIDI support and latency.

That said, the day an application that fits the SAT-style analogy x:Cubase::The Gimp:Photoshop will be a coup for Linux. I dream of being able to create and produce music using entirely Free software.

GStreamer and fruity loops/cubase

The lack of midi support currently is a problem yes. Latency is not a problem with GStreamer.

i can't answer the integratio

i can't answer the integration question, however as a note: they claim to be a studio that runs on Linux - they don't mention integration or dependency on any specific desktop environment. As far as i know, wxWidgets strives for the same independence.

wicked soft

man, have been searching for a soft likek this one so long !!!!!!
i tried ardour : no midi, not stable
i tried muse : not stable
i tried rosegarden4: not easy to use soft synths, and dssi not mature

gona try this one as soon as possible, just have to finich this gentoo install :'(

ONE WORD : THANKS !!!

Obviously Scarlet is not a musician.....

She/He doesnt know how much we needed something like this and I say thanks gnomedesktop.org for letting me know about this!

I mean, Linux musicians are literally dying for a good music app !!!

viva wired !!!

Yuhuuuuuuuu!!!!

Relax Scarlet, the internet is not such a bad place.

Mayhap it will be an ebuild f

Mayhap it will be an ebuild for it?? Would be a blast.

I have also made your way down the linux audio-path.

Rosegarden looks neat, but hard to set up.
Hydrogen seems too odd
BEAST/BSE - way weird for _me_ !
Jack to play nicely with any program is a jackpot! (no pun intended).
Succeeded with Hydrogen and Jack.
Timidity++ and Jack worked some

So, this is a very warmly welcomed project! Hope to see it grow and fullfill it's intended purpose :)
