Firestarter 1.0 Released

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

After many years, Firestarter 1.0 is finally available. Firestarter is a graphical, easy to use, firewall program for GNOME. To get an idea of how the program works, take a look at these screenshots.

Changes in this new version include:

  • A completely rewritten user interface
  • A new flexible access policy system
  • The ability to restrict outgoing traffic, and white or blacklisting websites
  • Visual tracking of established connections, and the programs that opened them
  • Improved performance, thanks to gnome-vfs and the asynchronous IO functions
  • Major usability improvements

This version requires GNOME 2.6 or newer. Binary and source packages are available for download.

"Your kernel does not support iptables"

Ok, as I don't seem to find any useful information on this on the web, I'll try it here as a last chance. Here we go:

I installed Firestarter 1.0.3 as a Slackware package from linuxpackages.org and it runs really fine out of the box. To be able to start it without having to log in as root I also followed the instructions in the documentation on the FS website on how to start it via "sudo firestarter". This works fine when issuing the command from a running terminal.

Anyway, whenever trying to run it from the Gnome applications menu, or a starter on a panel, or a desktop starter, whether letting it run in a terminal or not, it starts with an error window saying

"Failed to start the firewall
Your kernel does not support iptables."

So just for the record, my kernel does support iptables. Firestarter is also running as root when this happens, as it should. What the heck is going wrong there?!?

So I hope anyone is even reading this, and has a hint for me.

Regards,
Sebastian.
