The Hula Project

Nat wrote: Today we are thrilled to be launching Hula, a new project to build an open source mail and calendar server. Hula is a really exciting project already in part because we think that we can fill a hitherto-unclaimed spot in the stack of open source applications and in part because we've "primed the pump" by basing it on an existing, functioning codebase: a Novell product called NetMail. NetMail already runs millions of calendars and mailboxes. And so we're starting off with the mundane work of building a functioning server done, leaving us to focus on creating interesting new functionality.

Redundant Unnecessery effort. by Anonymous George

Not Really Redundant

From what I read of Nat's post, this is being built on lots of commercial technology that Novell have been peddaling for years, so this is more of an open sourcing and extension of existing stuff. Yeah it's Novell technology rather than some other tech. Another system is not a bad thing in open-source, and Novell obviously are pretty excited about their own software already, and perhaps being that they made it they know of a few things in it that a real show stoppers..

More of the same is not necessarily bad.. Don't knock it until it's tried and tested. Then if it's a bit cack, knock it then...

A matter of definition

This is a matter of definition. Is something that provides nothing but a web interface "groupware" in the traditional sense? I think not, but it certainly is collaberation software.

We use Horde and love it, the IMP mail interface is the best webmail package anywhere (IMHO). We also use OpenGroupware, and are looking at creating a GroupDAV connector for Kronolith so your Horde can be a lightwieght interface to you 'real' groupware server. The modularity of Horde is really amazing, those guys know how to code.

Re: Client

No. Niether does it have any mobile device support (although a SyncML implementation is in developement).

But in its defense Horde is really a frontend, you should be able to connect it it 'real' groupware services.

I'll second that

Hula does seem interesting, but the Gnome connection is tenuous at best. I was a bit disheartened the other day to see planet.gnome.org lit up like some astroturf marketting campaign for Hula.

Yeah, it's like this stunning complete silence regarding the Hula project... you'd never even know it existed!

That's exactly what they do. They took an already well-working project, relicenced it under the LGPL and want to add features to make it more linux-friendly. What more could you ask for ?

Agree

Agree. I really respect and admire Nat, but I really just don't get this one. Collaberation is for people who need to collaberate, otherwise why not use a PDA? And how many college students even use of those, or even a day planner. I was in college not too long ago and the answer is 'damn few'.

HULA (when it works) may answer a legitimate need, but to say there is a huge gap regarding collaberative technologies in the Open Source space is just plain unsupportable.
