The GNOME 2.10 splash screen contest is now closed. Thanks to everyone who submitted entries. In just a few days, we gathered more than 220 entries - a tribute to the popularity and success of GNOME. There were many high quality entries which made choosing a final splash screen very difficult. However, a decision had to be made, so, the splash screen chosen is.... here.

polish

I already said in a previous message that I think the winner is in the best third, but you cannot seriously use the word "polish" to describe the winner. I would say that it's main weakness is its lack of polish. As I noticed earlier, the lighting on the gnome text imply a light comming from the top left, while the shadow of the foot on the wall/ground implies a source located bottom right. As Jimmac also noticed, the lighting on the foot implies also a light source top-left, which is the oppposite from the shadow. So clearly this splash lacks polish and can be certainly improved in this way. As for other mentionned criteria, I do not know what "professional" means (WinXP professional surely looks professional and has been designed by professionals, but it just looks too colorful to me). The choice of colours also is irrelevant to me (too subjective).
Real criteria for a splash screen are:
1- visibility of "Gnome" and version number
2- internationalistaion: implies no additional text
3- not too intrusive (you have to see it every time you log on)
4- should not contain non free copyrighted work
I think the winner succeeds not to bad in these 4 areas, although the version number might be too small

Additionally,
5- it should integrate with Gnome (this is subjective).
6- no obvious mistakes should be visible.

point 6 is where the winner fails.
