I would love to see some code put back into the offical gaim, the SIP code from http://sourceforge.net/projects/gaim-sip/ or it seems that gaim-vv is active again http://gaim-vv.sourceforge.net/.

People always ask about the v

People always ask about the versioning scheme each release. Basically, the new way they've numbered things has little to do with interaction with the user, and more to do with plugin developers and possible features.

A major number bump (1.x.x -> 2.x.x) would mean that the internal structure of gaim (API) has changed so much that old plugins will no longer work. A minor number bump (1.1.x -> 1.2.x) means that new features are available for plugin devels. Old plugins will still work, but new plugins may not work for old versions. A patch bump (1.1.0 --> 1.1.1) means that its mostly a bug-fix release, or nothing was changed in the plugin-API that really affects anything too much.

jabber support problems

1. No support for jabber transport - for me, this is show-stopper
2. IIRC no support for jabber conferences (well, I can be wrong at this one)

Unless they've removed it sin

Unless they've removed it since 1.1.x, jabber conferencing is supported. Joining an existing public room is just like in IRC (Tools->Room List->Get List, double-click the one you want).

Creating a new room is a little unintuitive - Go to Buddies->Join A Chat, fill in the info for the new room, it'll automatically create the room when you join it, if it doesn't exist.

Getting invited works fine. Inviting someone else into a 1-on-1 chat isn't done though AFAIK, it has to transparently create a new chat room and invite the other original chatter, and the new chatter, into it.

1. I meant - jabber transportS - gateways to other IMs (MSN, AOL, ICQ, ...)

Gateways? by Anonymous George

Forgive my ignorance, but wha

Forgive my ignorance, but what would be the point of using jabber transports on Gaim when you can already use multiple protocols easily with more robustness and reliability than you could with a transport.

gnomefiles-announce.org

Nothing against release announces on gnomedesktop.org, I did that myself, but /at least/ try to add some real value into the articles. I mean, come on, this post is no better than a link to a simple announce on gnomefiles.org.

sorry

sorry...

right

i agree completely.

btw, there are no screenshots of new version, have they cleaned up their ui or not for this time?

100%agree

100% agree

And what about the jabber support ? (it's far from perfect at the moment)

what's the problem?

i've been using gaim primarily for jabber for a couple years now, i dont know what problem you speak of, works awsome for me. have you reported bugs?

Unsupported Jabber features by Anonymous George

hahah... sorry

something exploded there... sorry bout the tripple post.

I believe a cleanup for the U

I believe a cleanup for the UI is on its way, but we will probably not see it until v2.0 with the upcomin new status-interface they toying around with.

Why?

The old UI is just fine and good. It doesn't atleast clutter up my desktop, unlike some other IM clients. And it's easy enough to understand too: point and click to chat. What is wrong then?
