Reporting bugs for universe

It's a bit hard to report bugs for 'universe' packages. Apparently, the Ubuntu bugzilla is only for the main repository, and other packages can hardly be reported on.

I first tried to use bugzilla, but they informed me that they are not handling these kind of bugs there. I then contacted the maintainer mentioned in one package (e.g., the ttf-larabie-font package, which is basically empty) but he only maintains the Debian (not Ubuntu) package and in Debain the same package works properly. Next I tried the Ubuntu-user list, but it seems the posting was never approved.

I also just found that the gnome-blog applet can be installed, though the (required) libgnomepanelapplet binding for Python is not in the repository, so I am wondering again.

I think the bindings are ther

I think the bindings are there. Have your tried python-gnome2-extras?

Works

Jep, thanks, that works. It's still a bug of course, because gnome-blog has not listed that package as a dependency.

Yes. I also think that it is

Yes. I also think that it is a non-standard package name... I needed to compile some python applets, and all docs said I needed special bindings for this, - don't remember what they called it, but definitely not python-gnome2-extras! I spend a great deal of time locating this one, so spread the word ;P

Suspend To Disk by Anonymous George

sudo apt-get install acpi acp

sudo apt-get install acpi acpid acpi-support

sudo /etc/init.d/acpid restart
sudo /etc/init.d/acpi-support restart

cd /etc/acpi
sudo ./hibernate

....or something to that effect. It doesn't work for me anyways, but I think it's an issue with ACPI itself, not what I'm doing.

no need for ACPI

ACPI is really buggy on my machine (Compaq ARMADA 1700), so I disabled it. But "hibernate" still works fine.

Automatic

Run:

sudo /etc/acpi/hibernate.sh
sudo /etc/acpi/sleep.sh

I don't understand why they haven't hooked sleep.sh up to the lid switch... And don't hibernate after you've upgraded the kernel. Reboot first or you lose your old session. A bug has been filed.

Mixin' and Matchin' by Anonymous George

Replacements a litt

You should check out gedit for a kate replacement if you're after very very basic ide features (ie, syntax hilighting and that's pretty much all either of them offer).

Also, can Evolution replace kmail for you? It's a little bloated though...myself, I keep coming back to mozilla thunderbird. If you apply the Gnome theme at http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?t=62749 it ALMOST looks like a gtk app.

I'm just thinking about all the extra kde libs that have to be installed. It's a good thing if that can be avoided.

You miss the point that havin

You miss the point that having both Gnome and KDE is the best of both worlds and gives the user a mix and match choice which is better that forcing the user to use a tool they don't prefer. ie I prefer Kate due to the way it stores a file list versus the tabs on Gedit and it's a fairly sophisticated text editor.

Awesome distribution

Definitely the best distribution I have ever used. Now I just wish they would add inotify and Beagle soon ;).

RE: beagle

Due for full support in the next release.

They have inotify. One just has to put "inotify" on the kernel commandline ...

Re: they have ... by Anonymous George

Cool

Then where is the Beagle package in Apt? ;)

Beagle runs fine

Does not really work

"PLEASE NOTE: The version used in this HOWTO is 0.0.9 which requires inotify 0.21 which is not in the Ubuntu kernel. This means that you need to use Beagle without inotify (with means no USB problems - see below), build your own kernel or use Beagle 0.0.8 (see below)."

And Beagle 0.0.8 is not in the repository.

uhhh...sorry. when I installe by Anonymous George

Just works..

I just want to add that this is a "just works" distribution. Its very hard to mess things up and you get more or less the newest desktop, etc. Sort of like RedHat Fedora but it has a packetmanagement that is by far better than Redhats.

strange bug

there is a strange bug in hoary: theme manager does not show any previews, but grey boxes and question mark.

I've been running Hoary for some time now, and it's probably the best desktop distro I've ever used. It's leaps and bounds ahead of Warty, and offers all kinds of new goodies (ie. mono, muine, evince, python 2.4, xcompmgr for transparency and drop shadows, etc etc) Fantastic job, Ubuntu team!
