Great Distro But CD Lacks Developer Tools

I've been using Hoary for several weeks - it's a very nice distro and loaded perfectly on my old Dell 8000 laptop. But as a developer, you must immediately download lots of basic tools (ie gcc in package "build-essential"). I realize only so much can fit on 1 cd but it would be great to have an optional 2nd or even 3rd cd with "extras". However, I did read that there is a dvd edition that has virtually all the packages on it - if so, that would be the answer if I can find a dvd burner.

ps: as a long-time KDE user, I really like the gnome interface on Hoary and now use it for basic stuff (but I still use KDE packages for Kate, Kmail, etc). I simply downloaded the "kubuntu-desktop" to get all the KDE packages but then did not load the kdm or desktop files to keep the gnome "look and feel".
