GNOME - Future ideas

GNOME
GNOME

I've created an article with mockups and ideas for things that I'd like to see GNOME 3.* doing in the future.
The article can be seen here, with more ideas and things available through my blog, such as the Scoop proposal, and a mockup of how to make drag and drop far easier with spatial nautilus.

Gnome must run well on subpowered computers

Hail, fortunate inhabitant of the rich world!

If we look a bit beyond our noses, we'll find thousands of millions of people are not, nor will they be, one tenth as rich as you (or me), so it is an error to believe superpowered hardware is a given.

I'm not a believer in charity hardware as a big vector of progress, but I'm sure many millions will be able to afford soon-available el-cheapo computers which will be the state of the art in integration and low power consumption, but will have limited processor speed, RAM and storage. And free software will power these computers from day one, their price comparable with a desktop license for bare XP.

Therefore, it is of utmost importance to develop a platform that runs nicely on limited equipment in order to serve the needs of so many people, rather than (only) catering only for the interests of the rich and developed.
