AbiWord

The AbiWord team, developers of the award-winning multi-platform Word Processor, is very proud to announce AbiWord v2.3.0, the first snapshot of the development that will lead to AbiWord 2.4.

This snapshot allows interested developers, testers and users a sneak preview into the future of AbiWord.

New features of this release include (amongst others):

Table to Text
Tight Textwapping around Images
Grammar Checking (Plugin)
Math Support (Plugin)
GNOME Office Chart Embedding (Plugin, experimental)
OpenDocument Support (Plugin, experimental)

AbiWord v2.3.0 is parallel installable with AbiWord v2.2 so users can try it out without disturbing their stable AbiWord 2.2 version. We are very much interested in any bug you may find. Please report these to http://bugzilla.abisource.com/.

While we encourage people to try out the new snapshot, please be aware that is a development snapshot and is not expected to be stable in any sort of way.

Now we're getting somewhere . . .

Not having SmartQuotes when the option (checkbox) to use them is there, is a problem that needs to be fixed. Please fix this.

The Kerning issue is bearable, but how about the tracking problem? If this is a GNOME-specific problem than a.) You need to find a solution to this quickly, or b.) If your hands are tied because the GNOME devs are responsible, then I offer my sincere apology. But after so many releases, this problem should have been fixed. What have you done to fix this? Have you contacted the GNOME devs?

When the word "compelled" looks like "compe ll ed" (gaps are a bit narrower, obviously but VERY noticeable - you get my point) and most other words have noticeable gaps in them, the wordprocessor does not read fonts coreectly, or else has no system of tracking. THIS ALONE renders Abiword unusable because the text looks terrible. Didn't you folks notice this?

Other examples: h is, un ited, d ie d, th e, and the list goes on. Nearly every word displayed by Abiword, in whatever font, has this problem.

Strangely, the tracking in OpenOffice is normal.

Why no hyphenation? I mean, the option seems to be "there", as in there is a "disable hyphenation" checkbox.

Look, my intention is NOT to be a troll. I'm just a user who has been using wordprocessors on all manner of systems for years now. Even on the most simplistic wordprocessors (in comparison to today), I hve never ever encountered tracking issues, or a number of checkboxes which were there for . . . no reason. SmartQuotes has been the standard for some time now, by the way. Why is it broken?

I just naturally expect certain basic things to be there after so many releases of Abiword.

At the very least, focus on the tracking issue. If it is a GNOME-specific problem, then why are you releasing Abiword? With this tracking issue, text looks terrible. It is irresponsible to release software that is so full of bugs, unless of course all wer'e meant to do with Abiword is test for bugs.

I have outlined some serious, specifc, fundamental problems. You should start to assume that EVERY user is a professional and expects professional quality. To do anythintg less is highly disrespectful. Unless of course, Abiword is not meant to be a professional wordprocessor, or is not meant to compete with the likes of OpneOffice or MSoffice. In that case, I see no reason to even bother making Abiword. We have plain text editors for that.
