AbiWord

The AbiWord team, developers of the award-winning multi-platform Word Processor, is very proud to announce AbiWord v2.3.0, the first snapshot of the development that will lead to AbiWord 2.4.

This snapshot allows interested developers, testers and users a sneak preview into the future of AbiWord.

New features of this release include (amongst others):

Table to Text
Tight Textwapping around Images
Grammar Checking (Plugin)
Math Support (Plugin)
GNOME Office Chart Embedding (Plugin, experimental)
OpenDocument Support (Plugin, experimental)

AbiWord v2.3.0 is parallel installable with AbiWord v2.2 so users can try it out without disturbing their stable AbiWord 2.2 version. We are very much interested in any bug you may find. Please report these to http://bugzilla.abisource.com/.

While we encourage people to try out the new snapshot, please be aware that is a development snapshot and is not expected to be stable in any sort of way.

I agree with you

about the poor typographical quality of Abiword's output. I also understand whay nobody is really bothered by that.

I am definitely not bothered by it. The thing is, unix users who care about typography generally don't even bother with wordprocessors. I only use wordprocessors (does not matter which one, Abiword, OO, MSWord if I am on Windows, they are all the same kind of crap) when I need to write a quick report in which formating and typography does not really matter. There are much better options if you want to produce a beatifully typeset document.
