Nokia releases GTK+ and GStreamer based Internet tablet

GTK
GTK

A major endorsement for the GNOME platform came today as Nokia announced their Nokia 770 Internet tablet device. This very cool device is linux based and used technologies such as GTK+, GStreamer, gnome-vfs, gconf and dbus. There is a developers page, maemo.org which have information on how you can write your own applications for the device. Be sure to check out the screenshots page .

People who want to know more about this device is recommended to come to GUADEC in Stuttgart starting this Saturday, where Nokia will do a presentation. The development of this device was done in cooperation with Fluendo, OpenedHand and Imendio.

Why buy this?

Despite the fact that I think it's cool, I can't think why anyone would want to buy this product:

1. It's memory capacity is minimally better than recent phones (128 MB) vs 10MB internal + 64MB hot-swappable for the not-very-hot 6630. It can't replace a phone, though so you need to have one of those in your pocket too.
2. There are many alternatives in the PDA space already which have some useful software for them already (e.g. GPS navigation software etc) so how will this make itself stand out?
3. As far as I am aware, sales of PDAs are dwarfed by those of smartphones anyhow so why do companies waste time making PDAs?
4. Smartphones can be obtained on contracts which mean that they are financed for you (i.e. you don't have to come up with £200 or whatever upfront). So why would one spend money on this tablet?

I'd be happy if someone came up with a reason - I just can't think of one myself.
