Nokia Makes Donation to GNOME Foundation

STUTTGART, Germany –May 31, 2005 – Nokia, which recently launched the Nokia 770 Internet Tablet, announced today a developer device program at the GNOME user and Developer European Conference (GUADEC). The developer device program will donate the proceeds from the sales of 500 Nokia 770 devices to the GNOME Foundation.

Publicity stunt

Looks like just another publicity/marketing stunt. That, and making them look good in the front while supporting software patents in the back.

It would be really cool if GNOME Foundation says, "No thanks, we don't accept donations from companies that support software patents," because I think software patents is a more important and pressing issue for GNOME than funding for the Foundation (just imagine how many silly patents GNOME is currently violating, and how much money will be wasted to get courts to agree that those patents are silly). But it's always difficult to turn down donations. :-(
