AbiWord 2.2.8 Released

AbiWord
AbiWord

This release has seen a lot of bugfixes, polish, and cleanups as we are
nearing the end of the 2.2 release cycle. We are working hard towards
AbiWord v2.4, which is shaping up nicely.

This release is mostly a bugfix release, with some minor new features.
The changes from 2.2.7 to 2.2.8 include, amongst others:

  • Make Text Folding actually work
  • Fix text justification on MacOSX
  • Initial support for the OpenDocument (.odt) file format

The full Changelog can be found here.

All users are advised to upgrade to this new release. Windows users are
advised to uninstall older versions first, and to make sure there are no files
left behind[1].

Abiword and gedit

I've just installed the rpms of 2.2.8 on fedora core 3. Nice. I've got a question sort of related to abiword.

When I start gedit from cold (after a reboot), it takes about 2-3 seconds to start with a lot of disk grinding. When I started abiword, it comes up in a fraction of a second with almost none.

Why? Abiword is a much more complicated program. What are you guys doing right, that the gedit (and, truth be told, many GNOME apps) doing so badly wrong.

I wish there are better start

I wish there are better startup performance analysis tools for Linux. Many apps start slowly on a cold boot, or when there's heavy disk activity, but it's a real pain to analyze the problem because there's no way to empty the kernel cache. Which means that I have to basically restart every time I want to try something out. :(

Wrong question. You need to a

Wrong question. You need to ask what gedit does wrong ;)

Seriously, it's not that simple comparing startup performance.
If you e.g. run the gnome version of abiword with lots of plugins it of course takes longer than the plain gtk version without any plugins. The same if probably true for gedit.

That said we are a bit proud of abi's startup performance and try not to do very harmful things. Still we can get better!

try again

Read it again.. that's exactly the question I did ask (anonymously).

Well, the gedit team actually

Well, the gedit team actually looked into this. As far as they can see (correct me if I'm wrong), it's actually Bonobo which is slowing gedit down. As AbiWord doesn't use bonobo, we don't have that problem.

I can't see that myself

Not being a developer on any of these apps, this is purely opinion... but: When I start evolution (which uses Bonobo pretty heavily), it loads and runs quickly like Abiword. Something about gedit is just broken.

The Help Documents are bad!

The gnome version should use scroll-keeper etc etc. not popup a web browser ... or if so use better html :-D

how can one help out making better help docs??

Yes it can. In fact, the latest 1.0.2 release of autopackage specifically supports Ubuntu's usage of sudo. I installed Ubuntu just for the sake of making autopackage work on it.
Please read http://autopackage.org/docs/howto-install/ for installation instructions.

the .doc file abiword saves is just a renamed .rtf, afaik.

but support for opendocument file format is wery pleasant news indeed, even at this preliminary state.

The Autopackage for linux was available too. Furthermore, I just uploaded RPMs for Fedora Core 1 and 2. RedHat Linux 9 and Fedora Core 3 will follow tonight, as well as the MacOSX build.

I needed some sleep, hence the delay.

Well deserved rest, I'd say ;
