New version available

I released a new version yesterday that fixed the most important drawbacks listed in the many comments I had.

Feel free to checkout the announcement news here

Very much needed

All I have to say is that proper control over the right-click menu of a file manager is essential for and Nautilus-Actions fills a very big void in that regard. Although it does not yet work reliably, I can see this becoming very-very useful quite soon.

And a big thank you to the author :)

P.S. Anybody know - how stable is the Nautilus extension API? Are there any public promises on this? It would be sad if nice projects like this had to play perpetual catch-up...

Still...

Such corrections are IMO the best help any non-native speaker can get.

For example, the freshmeat.net team makes corrections to the project descriptions submitted by the authors. Since I submitted many descriptions there, it helped me a LOT to improve my own language skills. In fact, I still believe that they taught me a large part of the basic grammar that way. Each time I tried to submit a perfect description, until one day I finally wrote one that didn't require any editing at all.

That said, why aren't the gd.o articles being edited? It's not all that much work, and it would certainly help everyone involved.

Sorry,...

...this was meant to be a reply to the "A large number of GNOME" posting below.

Batch Processing Images

I can imagine a number of interesting things that could be done by combining this with GIMP's batch mode.

it has a few problems

I actually just installed this extension yesterday. For some reason, it doesn't seem to be working. I can get the program to run and I can save actions, but the actions don't appear on the nautilus context menu. I have tried restarting nautilus and rebooting, but it still doesn't work. Any Ubuntu users out there that have gotten this to work?

There are a few issues with the program itself that are kind of frustrating. Having to use a file selection dialog to navigate to the command is a pain. It would be easier if I could just type in the command and have the program use the shell to evaluate it. The other thing I don't like is having to use root to add new actions. Actions shouldn't be global, each user should be able to have their own. Aside from those small complaints, I think that the extension is a great idea and I would like to see this functionality integrated into nautilus by default. Also, I would like to see an 'Actions' menu added to the menu bar of folders for which there are available actions, that way I wouldn't have to climb up to the parent folder and right click the folder I was previously in.

Re: it has a few problems

I will try to fix all these issues in the next release. I find some drawbacks to the file chooser button too and I hesitated for a long time to keep it and finally I did. But it is slow and if you know the path it is faster to edit it by hand, I agree.

For the global config thing, it is planned in the next release to have per user configuration which make more sense, you are right.

For your appearance problem, did you set the conditions correctly, select the good schemes, etc. Feel free to fill a bug report here
with your config file attached so I can try to help you.

thanks for the feedback

oops

I just read through the tutorial again. I forgot to put a '*' in the File Pattern textbox. I've got it working just fine now. I'm looking forward to the next version! Keep up the good work.

Rewritten with proper grammar: by Anonymous George

Re: Rewritten with proper grammar:

Sorry for my poor english. Indeed, I'm a french guy and french guys are not well-known for their mastering of foreign languages :o)

If I could have been able to edit my post, I would have fixed with pleasure all these grammar mistakes I made, but I can't...

GrumZ, thanks for your work

GrumZ, thanks for your work on Nautilus-actions, it looks really good.

A large number of GNOME

A large number of GNOME programmers (and people in the world in general) do not have English as their first language, and are forced to use our broken linguistic chimera as a means of communication in all things computer-related. Give the guy a break.

The influx of programmers without English as a second language is only a good thing for GNOME and Free s/w in general. There are some *awesome* programmers in India, China, South America, Eastern Europe, Russia, and lots of other places. Better than you or me, better than 99% of good hackers. Some of these guys are real whizzkids. If we reject them they'll just go write MS viruses :-/

Besides, maybe this guy has English as a first language, and is just tired from hacking all night on Nautilus-actions 0.3! :P

It's nothing like open

It's nothing like open source.

It would be more polite to use a private means of communication if one actually cares that much.

Well said, by Anonymous George
