Are you arguing that Gnome should not have working SMB support on Linux, just because something is missing on AIX?

gnome-vfs may be flexible, but it is utterly broken. As far as I can tell, there's still exactly one app that has read/write support for SMB shares via gnome-vfs: Nautilus. And even that one is still broken: copying fails half the time, performance is terrible, and the multitude of dialog popups annoying.

smbfs works perfectly, and with every conceivable application - even gedit :-) It just needs some form of GUI to get a little easier to use.
