GNOME IM

A lot of you have noticed that while we typically release every three weeks, we haven't had a release in a while. We've shifted all our efforts to finishing Gaim 2.0.0. Gaim 2.0.0 has a ton of great features, fixes every problem you've ever had with Gaim, makes drastic changes to huge parts of Gaim---especially status, includes three new protocols, and does a bunch of other amazing stuff. We're looking to feature freeze at the end of this month and release a month or so later, so be sure to get on our cases and make sure we get it finished...

especially status

I would like more details about what "especially status" means.

I hope in means that gaim will no longer spawn all kinds of windows telling me that it has lost a connection or is trying to reconnect. I don't care. I am trying to type in word, stop stealing focus. If it is having problems connecting change the system tray icon or something.

Even with the useless popup messages gaim is by far the best IM program out there. I cannot picture using a computer without it. Thank you gaim developers.

GNOME 2.10 and later

GNOME 2.10 and later supports focus stealing prevention.

I shouldn't be saying this

Well, I shouldn't really say this, b/c its against all Gaim developer's wishes, but I've been trying out 2.0.0 on my own, and I must say that even though it is incomplete, it does rock. Contacts are now handled inteligently. For example, when you view a log for a contact, it now cats all of that contact's s/ns.

What about video support?

Is video support coming soon?

you didnt read the article i guess ;)

good news is yes, they are integrating gaim-vv:

Gaim-vv

On a related note, the gaim-vv project—which aimed to offer a framework for voice and video support in Gaim—is being merged back into Gaim proper for hopeful incorporation into Gaim 2.0.0. This will be used to support Google Talk's voice as well as MSN and Yahoo! webcams.

Woohoo

This looks like the release when I can finally get my msn windows buddys to use Gaim, and create a jabber account.
They do not wan't to use multiple programs, so gaim has to be just as good as msn.

awsome

i was beggining to wonder, but this is indeed incredably good news. gaim 2.0.0 should indeed rock.

Finally....

The Rock has come back.... oh wait, wrong reference :P

GAIM 2.0 should be the desktop IM app for Gnome to kill all others. With the current Evolution integration going on for the contacts in Gnome for various apps (and I hope that keeps progressing and improving support), GNOME will soon have a proper alternative to Windows Messenger/Outlook integration via SIP in a corporate environment.

My current office has Windows XP, Windows Messenger and Outlook as part of their standard build image. It will be good to see the above GNOME alternatives in a standard install going forward :)
