haha! A gnome app having vi by Anonymous George

yay

It's very nice to see people come up with fresh ideas rather than just cloning (the UI of) existing apps or following the GNOME HIG to avoid controversy.

Install problem

I can't install Scribes because, after running python setup.py install as root, this error occurs:

Fatal Python error: can't initialise module gtksourceview
Aborted (core dumped)

Using Python 2.4 and all the necessary gnome-python modules under Mandriva Linux 10.2. Any ideas?

This is the full

This is the full list:

gtksourceview-1.4.1-0.1gpw
libgtksourceview-1.0_0-1.4.1-0.1gpw
libgtksourceview-1.0_0-devel-1.4.1-0.1gpw
gnome-python-gtksourceview-2.12.0-1mdk
gnome-python-gnomevfs-2.12.1-2mdk
gnome-python-2.12.1-2mdk
gnome-python-gtkhtml2-2.12.0-1mdk
gnome-python-gtkspell-2.12.0-1mdk
gnome-python-canvas-2.12.1-2mdk
gnome-python-extras-2.12.0-1mdk
gnome-python-gconf-2.12.1-2mdk
gnome-python-bonobo-2.12.1-2mdk

I will update the gtksourceview RPMs, I think they are obsolete. I don't think that filling a bug report would be a good idea, though, because the problem is probably all on my side: my original Mandriva installation has been updated to unofficial Gnome 2.12 packages, and to more bleeding edge stuff grabbed from the cooker (developers') repositories.

A proof of the Mandriva Linux robustness, since it all works perfectly, but little glitches like this one are the least you could expect with such a Frankenstein installation ;)

Wrong

Wrong: there is a very simple, Notepad-like text editor for GNOME, and it's called Leafpad.

Scribes is clearly aiming at being something more than that, possibly a good general + programmer's editor, so I'd leave the "simple" adjective out of the door when describing it.

Not Simple? by Anonymous George

Heh :)

My my, aren't we a bit pessimistic here? ;)

RE:Wrong by Anonymous George

Depends on how you define

Depends on how you define simple.

How Clintonian :) I define "simple" both as "having few parts; not complex or complicated or involved" and as "elementary, simple, uncomplicated, unproblematic". So a "simple text editor" is something very easy to use but also lacking functionalities which can be found in other, more "complex" (wordnet can help with that one too :) text editors.

My impression is that Scribes' author(s) confuses "simple" with "easy to use", forgetting the "lacking functionalities" part. A nitpicking remark, if you want, but again I don't consider Scribes a "simple text editor". You can read that as a praise, provided Scribes really is "easy to use".

Plus I wouldn't call Leafpad a GNOME app.

Me neither. In fact, I didn't: what I called it is "a simple text editor for Gnome". Being a GTK+ program, Leafpad blends nicely into a Gnome desktop environment.

Depends on semantics by Anonymous George

Would like to know more...

... especially on the "easy to use" front, but it seems it doesn't like my configuration since it doesn't install, so ...

rehdon

Aw, come on!

I mean, even a cursory glance at Scribes' roadmap (http://scribes.sourceforge.net/roadmap.html) makes it clear that it's got programmer's functions (syntax highlighting, bracket matching, automatic indentation) from version 0.1, with many more to come. Now, unless "programmer's editor" is synonim with "simple editor" for you, I really don't see what the point is in insisting that Scribes is "simple". But don't let me interfere with your semantic ideals, you can call it "kitchen sink" as far as I'm concerned.

ok, but...

Scribes is the simple, slim and sleek text editor for GNOME.

But that is what i think about gedit...
