GParted stands for Gnome Partition Editor.

It uses libparted to detect and manipulate devices and partitiontables while several (optional) filesystemtools provide support for filesystems not included in libparted.

It certainly has been a long time since the last release. All of a sudden i got caught up in 'real life' and couldn't find the time to work on gparted anymore.
It happens i suppose...

Anyway, gparted-0.0.9 contains lots of fixes, a few new features and tons of updated/new translations. See the Changelog for more information

existing VS new deps

amount doesn't matter in this case. The point is they are _new_ dependencies. personally I think it's a good idea to include *mm stuff in the standard gnome desktop. But i'm not sure if the majority of gnome devs/users share this opinion.
