Well, then how does Konqueror do it?

I do all my Filemanagement in Konqueror and it works great. I can walk into .tar.gz files, browse the contents in there and look at .html files in the .tar.gz without launching another application. All images are displayed correctly. Then I select a few files and copy them directly out of the .tar.gz to a webdav folder over ssl. It just works. Why can't gnome come up with great software like that?
