Latest Gaim Beta Arrives

GNOME IM

After several months of delay, the first beta of the popular open-source IM client Gaim is now available.

This new beta, Gaim 2.0beta1, now includes support for several IM (instant messaging) protocols, such as the SIP/SIMPLE protocols, Apple Inc.'s Bonjour, the older Zephyr protocol, Novell Inc.'s GroupWise Novell protocol and several more obscure protocols such as the Polish Gadu-Gadu.

Video/Voice

Video/Voice is part of gaim 2.x but it's not quite finished yet. If you want to try it out you can build gaim from source with the --enable-vv option (you need to install ortp and speex as deps). Unfortunately, it doesn't compile for me yet but work is continuing on it and hopefully sometime during the 2.x series it will be ready.

I'm also very happy to see that Sean, has been hired by google. Contrary to what some people may think/say I think it is going to benefit gaim development. But I guess only time will tell. :)

Note: I'm not a gaim developer, nor am I affiliated with google.

What about the conclusion

What about the conclusion that he was overambitious and there have been roadblocks thus far in the integration of webcam and voip support? Just because a person works for "evil google" doesn't mean that "evil google" is trying to destroy gaim.

Of course, they might... Neither of us have enough data to draw the "only conclusion", so lets stop spouting opinions as truth and leave the character attacks off this site.

If you're unhappy with gaim, feel free to fork it. On my part, I thank Google for funding Gaim development.

Gaim Beta1

Hmm, I've already been using Gaim Beta 1 since the 17th, and I think it's quite good. A few minor problems, like a crash when I tried to removed an account while I was logged in, but nothing earth shattering. The only things I don't quite like are that I can't just right-click the tray icon and set myself as away, and Gaim doesn't seem to remember the state and position of buddy list.

MSN video/audio support

Gaim is supposed to have support for MSN audio/video streams thanks to the merge of the Gaim-vv sources to the main sources, but... when will it happen?

confusion

i'm confused. does it, or does it not support voip?

Not really proprietary

Google's VOIP technology will be a simple and clean extension to Jabber that the Jabber community eventually implement in all Jabber clients. Google's application will be proprietary, but the addition to the protocol is freely implementable. In fact, Google made sure to make these additions public.

Maybe it was just postponed

Maybe it was just postponed for a later release? I've been trying the beta1 since its release and I'm quite pleased with it thus far. Bugs exists, but thats the point of the beta - to dig em out and have them fixed before the official release.

And I don't think forking Gaim will serve any purpose.

I think the fact that Sean works for Google on GTalk is a good thing, 'cause no plans for the client being released on *nix platform have been made public yet. So, I am thinking Gaim could provide a quite official support for the GTalk protocol (which is afterall based on XMPP).
