Sweep, an audio editor and live playback tool, just released its new developement version 0.9.0, featuring the switch to GTK+2 for its interface.

The new version also improves mp3 detection and loading, adds a new SVG icon, updates its Spanish and Polish translations, and includes several minor tweaks and improvements.

In a review in August 2005, Linux Format wrote about Sweep: "Sweep is excellent. [...], it is not functionally bloated and slow. It’s fast and efficient." and continue "[Sweep is] a step ahead of the competition, which is what you’d expect from an editor used at Pixar."

Try Wavemixer

If you're looking for an editor based on gStreamer, check Wavemixer. Building it on Ubuntu 5.10 is a two-step process:

1.) Install LibRASC
2.) Install Wavemixer

All dependencies are available in the repositories. The command "sudo apt-get install libgtkmm-2.4-dev libcurl3-dev libgstreamer0.8-dev libjack0.80.0-dev libsamplerate0-dev sox-dev libtag1-dev" should satiesfy most of them.

It compiles fine, it looks cool, and the online sample repository access is a feature I haven't seen elsewhere.

Unfortunatly, I wasn't able to make it to load a single file yesterday. Maybe, I just picked the wrong samples, and you have more luck. Have fun!
