Compiz, the OpenGL window/composite manager, has been released following David Reveman's talk at XDevconf yesterday.

"Compiz is an OpenGL compositing manager that use GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap for binding redirected top-level windows to texture objects. It has a flexible plug-in system and it is designed to run well on most graphics hardware."

Also, a new video demonstrating Compiz on XGL is now online. The video displays numerous previously unseen effects such as 3D objects on the desktop and animated backgrounds.

It can work with GNOME right

It can work with GNOME right now by replacing metacity - GNOME's official window manager. Running the command "compiz --replace ..." will replace metacity with compiz immediately. However, long-term, there will likely be some effort to merge the development of metacity and compiz. Soreon recently checked a new compositor into metacity CVS - under the spif2 branch, I believe - and that work, along with the work the metacity devs have done on window management policy, shouldn't and probably won't go to waste.
