Today we are happy to release a Kororaa Live CD showcasing Xgl technology. If you would like to find out what it's all about, then download the CD and boot up your pc! The Live CD comes with Xorg 7, Gnome 2.12.2, 3D support and of course Xgl ;)

The Kororaa project is a way of installing Gentoo* Linux* easily and quickly, similar to Gentoo's “Stage3 with GRP packages” install.

I finally broke down and bought a new video card recently. I told myself it was mostly because that 16MB was not enough for some of the graphics I am playing with now. Secretly, I think it was more because of some of the new things coming around like XGL.

I test drove it with a Pentium IV, 2Ghz, Radeon 9550 with 256MB. I originally bought a Nvidia MX 4000 128MB but kept having trouble with the drivers for it (I believe it was kernel compatibility as I was planning on using it with my main Gentoo install). Anyways, I must say wow!

XGL is definitely a change from the standard X server implementation. The smoothness, the "eye candy", and some of the user-feedback concepts were just amazing.

XGL, as with AIXGL, as with Xcomposite, etc are still new. Not all cards will support them. As they develop and become more pervasive I believe more heads are going to turn.

A little shake-up in the UI paradigm now and then is a good thing.
