Banshee, the next best thing to Linux iTunes

Gnome Multimedia
Gnome Multimedia

I want an audio player that will do everything that Apple's iTunes does..... including working with my iPod ..... and do it natively on Linux. That's a tall order. I've tried many fine Linux programs..... KDE's amaroK, RealPlayer 10 for Linux, Xine, etc. .... but none have scratched my itch.

From another perspective...

Appart from the features of a media player, people must start to think further if they want to contribute to "free"(as in free speech) software.
Indeed banshee is based on mono namely an OpenSource implementation of a *part* of microborg .net framework. Geeks should be aware that in the real world, when you will want to earn money with "free"(as in free speech) software , you will have to commercially convince key people (as people deciding which technologies to pay for in companies)...
In the real world, if you create your "free" software based a technology which is lead by microborg, you give fuel to microborg sales efficiency (exactly the same issue with JAVA and Sun).
Whatever you can think and as a matter of fact: .net IS lead by microborg.
So when you will try to push any "too much" mono based software in a company, let me tell you what you'll get: "your software is based on a old and incomplete version of .Net, I'll go for the leader of .net framework. Your software is based on Mono, just a ".Net--", go back from where you come plz... Same for JAVA and Sun... just try to "sell" an opensource version of a JAVA VM... ouch!
The gnome desktop and gnome vital applications must stay as far as they can from big firms technologies. They can interoperate with them, but in any case be based on them. Use c/c++, POSIX, python,ruby,ocaml,perl,erlang... you have far enough trustable technologies to choose from.
If people use "right" software, this will lead more developers to improve this software and you will get your bells and stuff.
Be carefull on technology trojan horses which will kill sales impact of people trying to live from "free" software.
Mono must have to same goal than Wine: interopability and that's it. You won't write applications for Wine! You will use Wine to run microborg winpuke applications! Same for mono. Keep in mind also, than some people are paid full time (or get something in return) to promote microborg techs on any fronts...
Plz, keep GNOME consistent and independent, I like it too much.
