GNOME 2.16.0 Release Candidate 1 (2.15.92) Released!

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

We are pleased to announce the release of GNOME 2.16.0 Release Candidate
1 (2.15.92). This is one of the last releases in the 2.15 development series and
represents a release that is now API/ABI, feature, string and UI frozen.
Hard code freeze is quickly approaching : this means that we're pretty
close to the final 2.16.0 release. The GNOME contributors are now busy
fixing the most important bugs that are still out there, localizing the
whole desktop or updating our documentation.

Also Builder.AU has a nice little preview of the up and coming new version of GNOME.

You can still make a difference and contribute to the best GNOME release
ever! Do you see all the 2.15.92 tarballs? Go download them. Go compile
them. Go test them. And go hack on them, document them, translate them,
fix them.

The release notes that describe the changes between 2.15.91 and 2.15.92
are available. Go read them to learn all the changes in this release:

Are you sure?

Are you sure?

The way I understand it, Metacity is now a compositing window manager (compositing is optional), which means it is just like Compiz. Of course it uses the Composite extension, but does it need OpenGL support? I've heard of reports of freezing and lockups if you are using the current nvidia drivers which don't have texture-from-pixmap.

Yes, the developing version by Anonymous George (not verified)

metacity compositor

Hmmm...I've been wondering about the status of the Metacity compositor. Does anybody know if it needs AIGLX/XGl? It would be a neat thing to enable, but texture-from-pixmap isn't going to be in either ATI or NVidia cards for a while. Can it run without hardware acceleration (yes, I know it would be slow)?

I guess so by Anonymous George (not verified)

Yep, you are right. And by Anonymous George (not verified)

Tomboy icon

From the screenshots in the article, I see that tomboy is still using the Tintin icon. To me, the icon doesn't make sense (although it is cute), but isn't there a copyright problem with using that icon?

I really don't kwon... have by Anonymous George (not verified)
