Linux

A Russian based company has released the first english edition of their "Linux XP Desktop" which contains a version of GNOME modified to look like WinXP. Looks like the source code modifications are available on a overloaded FTP server, but binary versions are only available on a trial basis.

Doesn't really look like much

Mostly it seems they have just changed the default theme. And still, the desktop doesn't look enough like XP either. A user can clearly see the difference. But what about usability? Does it really act and feel like Windows? I highly doubt. Even Nautilus looks normal. And I think that if a user expects the desktop to be like XP, they'll feel a bit awkward using Nautilus..I don't even understand why would they want to make a Linux distro that tries to imitate Windows. Just taking the good bits and leaving the rest out, and making it clear it's not Windows would be a lot more logical and clearer to users.

And their claim Need Internet Explorer or other Windows applications? Just install and run them under Linux XP Desktop! Thousands of Windows applications are tested for compatibility. You can use data from your Windows data drives, share folders or even logon to Windows domains.

Well, that claim is just ridiculous..Sure, Wine can run a lot of apps nowadays, even World Of Warcraft works, but again, the users are supposed to think they're running just another XP, so what do they do if an app refuses to function proberly (or at all) under Wine, the users will just get confused and most likely mad. It's a lose-lose situation. Besides, this isn't anything spectacular. Other distros come with Wine, even read/write NTFS is possible now with ntfs-3g, folder sharing and even logging in to Windows domains have been possible for ages..

Well, as long as the devs have fun...
