Interview with Milosz Derezynski (BMPx)

Gnome Multimedia

BMPx is a GTK+ media player rewritten from the ground up on the foundation of BeepMediaPlayer. Originally started as a "behind doors" project, BMPx aims high and will get there very soon. Version 0.30.x was launched just days ago in a totally new form that drops the old Winamp-style look, bringing a more iTunes-like interface that will soon support SVG themes. Let's see what the lead developer of BMPx (Milosz Derezynski) has to say about his creation in this detailed question-and-answer session.

sadly i have to agree

I have to agree. I'm also looking fo a long time at GNOME and it's software collection and don't understand it.
GNOME is a great desktop, i really love it but on the application side it just seems that everyone works on the 101. version of a program that already exists. There are so many existing things which are missing in the application space:

- a good Latex editor like kile. I know that i can use emacs with auctex and yes, it's great. But if you don't use latex every day but only from time to time a editor like kile is a great support. I know also some tries to build something for GNOME but they are far away from comparable to kile.

- a good bittorrent client. I know some GNOME clients but they only work for a simple download and seeding as long as i keep the download window open. I would love to have something like ktorrent which runs in the systray and which keeps the downloaded files in a list so that i can still seed them the next day or in a week.

- a good UML program. Yes i know dia but compared to professional UML apps this is just a joke.

- extension of GNOME office. Where are the database manager, a presentation program, a project planer, a flowchart and diagram app (which is better than dia or at least a improved dia). Yes i know shome tries to implement some of these programs but they are far away from beeing usable for the real world.

- a mindmapping app which creates latex, html, opendocument templates

- a good graphical spice program (clicking circuit together and analyse them)

- or think about education apps.

I think i could come up with more missing parts and i think everyone which uses his computer for other jobs than i do can come up with even more missing programs in his area.

So why people always tend to build the 101. music player or the 101. photo app and don't go out and create soemthing which we really need?

I had a great hope in Mono that it will bring new development into GNOME but until now i'm disappointed it just leed to more music player (banshee, muine) and more photo apps (f-spot).

Their is so many things we could do to make the GNOME space more attractive why waste our time on rebuilding and rebuilding again and again the same kind of apps?
