A first look at Gaim 2.0

GNOME IM
GNOME IM

The Gaim 2.0 release is nearing its home stretch. The Gaim team released beta4 last week, with a number of new features and UI improvements. Gaim 2.0 is shaping up as a net improvement over Gaim 1.5, though some features have not changed for the better, and voice support for Google Talk is still missing in action. More here.

Looking at the screenshots, it seems that at least 2 of the Gaim pref windows won't fit on a generic SVGA Gnome screen (a resolution still used by 10% of the internet population according to OneStat.com).

Merging

Well, gaim-vv was dropped when they started merging it with gaim.
It was the goal that the merge should be finished by 2.0, but it didn't.
Instead they decided to skip it into a 2.x release.
I'd guess that even as it seems like nothing has happened on the front, people are working on it in another branch.

Global controls are nice

I think the writer is wrong about the global controls.
If he wants different people to see him in different states, it shouldn't be controlled by the protocol, but rather the group.

Dunno if protocols support that though.
