Thomas Wood of art.gnome.org fame has been working hard on adding color scheme support to gnome-theme-manager. Some of the fruits of this labor can be seen here and also here.

I can't believe something so simple has been neglected all these years. GNOME seems to aim toward "new users" more than other desktop environments and yet "new users" invariably come from Microsoft Windows. Windows has had this functionality since at least 1993.

KDE has had it since day one.

Fantastic work. I've been waiting for something like this since the early days of Gnome 2. This is a sorely needed capability, and it's great to see someone stepping up and addressing it. Good job!
