Lightbird is an attempt to create a simple IM service for LANs(client and server).
It started as an ICQ Groupware clone.

It requires mono,gtk# 2.8 and SDL for sounds.

Isn't this what link-local jabber messaging is for? Why do we need yet another IM protocol?

Both gajim, gaim, ichat, adium, etc. all support this.
