Inkscape 0.45 - A Pretty Blurry Release

Inkscape
Inkscape

The Inkscape community today announces the newest version of its vector graphic drawing software. Inkscape 0.45 features a new Gaussian Blur SVG filter. Sponsored by Google's Summer of Code program, Gaussian Blur allows you to softly and naturally blur any Inkscape objects, including shapes, text, and images. This enables a wide range of photorealistic effects: arbitrarily shaped shades and lights, depth of field, drop shadows, glows, etc. Also, blurred objects can be used as masks for other objects to achieve the "feathered mask" effect.

Numerous other new features, enhancements to existing features, and bug fixes have been included. A history dialog allows you to browse your change history. Many new extension effects are added including Pattern along Path and Color Effects. There have been performance improvements to rendering speed, on the order of 2-3% in general, and up to 5-10% for drawings using heavy transparency and/or radial gradients. Compositing quality is also improved through the removal of banding seen in gradients. See the Release Notes for full details, and then go try it out yourself.

EPS/PDF? by Anonymous George (not verified)

Yes

Inkscape 0.44 will save as both PDF and ESP. Just do a "Save As" instead of an export. It seems to work great for drawings, although the PDF save doesn't seem to handle bitmaps. For drawings with a bitmap I do a print to file and convert the PS file to a PDF manually.

Printing bites big time

Inkscape is a awesome app but they really, REALLY need to fix printing. It's actually pretty embarrassing as a Linux app that printing works better under Windows than Linux.

Please, please Inkscape people look at the printing module.
Thanks

Re: Printing bites big time

Actually the source of the trouble is that the printing service really ought to come from Gtk - otherwise every gui application would need to implement their own unique printing tool. The good news is that as of Gtk 2.10 there is now a standard print dialog provided; unfortunately, for Inkscape 0.45 we only moved up to gtk 2.8 so don't have access to this new Gtk service.

But within days of cutting 0.45 final, work started on hooking up the gtk 2.10 print dialog in Inkscape's SVN head, so it will be definitely available in 0.46. If this is a killer issue for you, and you don't mind running at the bleeding edge, you could grab SVN and help us test out the new print dialog.

Excellent! I'll check out fron SVN in a couple of days and go for it. Thanks guys and gals.

Running on OS X

0.45 is an awesome release, and feels smoother using it compared to 0.44.

Inkscape is pretty sweet on both Windows and Linux, but feels grumpy on OS X.

Fortunately GTK+ Trunk has added support for GTK+ to run natively on OS X (without requiring X11) - which totally rocks. This will make inkscape (and the rest of the GTK+ apps) more fun to use, so let's hope we get to use it soon.

well ..Yes

Indeed ..now vectors extrude(Xara like), bitmap fills, envelope models for text distortion, mesh fills, then ..911!.

Good work ( Corel Draw cant' do all of these... )!. Also he can't export a .gif without a noisy' border.

Again -> Well done Inkscape guys.

i only have to say..

WOW! keep up the good work!!!

Inkscape simply rocks! :)

nothing more to say.. Keep on doing what you're doing :)
