GNOME

Timed to be released with GNOME 2.18.2, the Foresight Linux team is happy and proud to announce the release of Foresight Linux 1.3. For more information, view the release notes or download Foresight Linux, including a number of Live Media images, today.

Foresight Linux continues to build on it’s success of releasing a stable Linux distribution with the latest software, including GNOME and applications such as Banshee for music management, F-Spot for photo management, Pidgin and Ekiga for internet communication and OpenOffice.org for productivity and office applications. Providing the latest versions of applications gives our users access to the latest bug fixes, and the use of Conary as a package manager makes it easy for users to update the software on their desktop.

What does it offer, which other distros don't?

I downloaded and tested the live CD. The superficial testing I did failed to impress me too much. The GNOME desktop it offers is, well, a GNOME desktop. Just as on any current Ubuntu or Debian Unstable release. Nothing really special about it.

All distros have f-spot, Eikiga, Pidgin, banshee and OpenOffice.org. All current distros ship 2.18.*. So what the heck is Forsight's special raison d'être, especially in a world abundant with Linux distros?

BTW: What is special about banshee, warranting the special mention it gets in the announcement? To me it offers nothing I can't have with rhythmbox. Rather, it is missing essential features, like a library browser allowing to quickly select music by artist, genre and album and play them straight away without having to create a new playlist first.
