Image editing and creation is not limited to the Mac or Windows. In fact, one of the flagship applications for Linux (and open source) happens to be a photo manipulation application. Gimp is a very powerful tool that equals (and, in some instances, bests) its proprietary competition.

I would not be as brave as you by claiming this. Gegl was said to come with 2.0, then with 2.2, then expected for 2.4. 16 bits and native CYMK have been said to come "soon" since around 2000-2001 and yet they are not there. During that time, Krita as implemented the feature. I hope that one day Gimp will include gegl, but I would not dare to give a date.
I sincerely hope it is before Duke Nukem Forever.
