GNOME 2.22 Roadmap Released

Gnome 2.x
Gnome 2.x

The GNOME Roadmap for 2.22 (and partially for 2.24 and future 2.x releases) is available at:

http://live.gnome.org/RoadMap

The GNOME Roadmap is a big-picture view of functionality we expect GNOME to include in short-term and long-term future. The roadmap is based on feedback from current GNOME developers and other community members.

We hope this roadmap increases the awereness about the future steps of the project inside and outside the community and helps us to look forward and plan where we want to go.

file-roller

EDIT: This should be attached to rehdon's comment.

File-roller does this...or did you have something else in mind? Double-clicking an archive typically brings it up in file-roller as the default action. I know there are blocking issues with file-roller, but hopefully these will be fixed in the transition to gio/gvfs.

Something else

Sorry, I didn't explain exactly what I mean, which is: clicking on an archive in the file manager (if possible *any* GTK+ file manager, not Nautilus only) and open it as if it were a directory, for instance copying one or more files in another location without needing to open a File Roller window. Hope it's a bit clearer now. I guess KDE allows it already.

Nautilus?

This is kinda disturbing. No Nautilus fixes or new features? It smells that pretty much no one really maintains it anymore properly.

There seems to be work going by Anonymous George (not verified)

Indeed. That whole drag and

Indeed. That whole drag and drop issue that requires you to hold the mouse button when extracting files from file-roller has existed pretty much for as long as I can remember. I filed a bug three or four years ago, but it got dismissed.

Is there a way to browse

Is there a way to browse inside a compressed archive like it were a directory? several utilities allow for this under Windows. Also, I'd very much like to see more info shown when the mouse is hovering over a file.

Instead of just mentioning by Anonymous George (not verified)

Huh?

Instead of mentioning KDE (against which I have absolutely nothing, but know less than Windows unfortunately) you could try to answer my question ... wrt Gnome, thank you :)

Should be fixed now, at

Should be fixed now, at least here (Gnome 2.20.something)...

Nautilus?

Nautilus will be ported to the new gio/gvfs API, replacing gnome-vfs. That should make it easier for the developers to fix some of the more difficult Nautilus bugs.

So I only just got gnome

So I only just got gnome 2.20.1 and I'm already hanging out for the next release. Usually I have a few months between 'wanting'... These schedules need to be announced later ;)
