Hadess has posted some instructions for getting GNOME 2.0 running on Debian unstable.

The dependencies are working for me. Your gthumb2 problem may have to do with scrollkeeper. A bunch of packages call scrollkeeper in their postinst, and scrollkeeper can take a looong time, because it sometimes attempts to contact web sites that are down.
