Hadess has posted some instructions for getting GNOME 2.0 running on Debian unstable.

Not only have I had no problems with GNOME2 I have seen plenty of posts from others indicating that they also aren't having any problems. I think the news.gnome.org site may have been down do to traffic generated by the release, however I can get to it.
