Interviews
Interviews

"He chose to paint the situation that exists between GNOME and KDE as a picture of glorious harmony - but then one can only ask questions. One can't dictate answers." So, what do you do when you're given a set of unprofessional and highly combative interview questions? You dodge the bullets and tell the truth! :-) Here's an interview I did with a local newspaper last week. Harsh!

Varghese / Gordon irritating

I think that the interview with Sam Varghese was turbulent, and it was largely due to the unprofessional manner in which the interview with the Kompany's Shawn Gordon was conducted. When I read that interview last month, I was very unimpressed with Shawn Gordon in general. This developer tried to make KDE appear as some kind of martyr while at the same time, Shawn openly expressed that he thought very little of gnome. Even though he acts very un-businesslike, he complains about Gnome's "connections" with HP, Sun, RedHat. He arrogantly stated several times about the so called superiority of KDE's "technology" over Gnome, which is really more of a C++ vs C dispute. That statement really irritates me because no specific language will guarantee that a program is well designed, its how well the language is employed by the programmer.

I think Sam Varghese showed how little he knew about KDE and Gnome by the questions he asked. It was very obvious by the tone of Varghese's questions that he overwelmingly preferred KDE in his interview with Shawn Gordon. All of his questions basically gave Gordon a chance to sob and complain about everything that "was holding the Kompany back", which apparently included both RedHat and Debian, according to Gordon, who even referred to them as "QT Platforms." He complained about those distributions and about Gnome as an "obstacle" to KDE's goals. Who does Gordon think he is, the sole decision maker of the *nix deskop???? *nix does NOT revolve around KDE, but apparently Varghese and Gordon both think it does.

In Varghese's "Gnome interview" with Jeff Waugh, he continually harasses Waugh, asking him very confrontational questions about the Gnome desktop. He even goes so far to accuse the Gnome desktop of being more "bloated" than windows. (Like KDE isn't a waste of memory if you don't use it...) And of course, what do I see here, an accusation that Gnome is "affiliated" with Ximian, Mono, Redhat, etc... (isn't corporate support a GOOD thing??) In conclusion, I think that Varghese is probably not a linux using journalist, due to his sufficient lack of understanding of Gnome and KDE, and Shawn Gordon is.... very full of himself and the KDE project.
