Software that 'just works'

"He chose to paint the situation that exists between GNOME and KDE as a picture of glorious harmony - but then one can only ask questions. One can't dictate answers." So, what do you do when you're given a set of unprofessional and highly combative interview questions? You dodge the bullets and tell the truth! :-) Here's an interview I did with a local newspaper last week. Harsh!

Re: Varghese / Gordon irritating

Hahaha... but is the Australian newspaper IT-specific? It may have an IT section but are you guaranteed that the editors/publishers are any more than clueless? It's like that stupid article to which Slashdot linked, The Linux Uprising. A few key quotes:

Imagine the havoc in the energy business if some newcomer started giving away gasoline.

We're not going to war with Finland (ie: Iraq), and you can't copy gasoline.

Intel Corp.[...] started making chips for Linux.

This one speaks for itself.

It ultimately is a question about whether societies are going to value intellectual property or not.

This is a quote from Craig Mundie. Can you comment on this? I honestly don't believe many people know the definition of "intellectual property," let alone care what it means. It seems more like corporate-speak to me.

Before using open-source software, tech companies must sign a license in which they promise to give away innovations they build on top of it.

Damn this makes me vomit with rage... (I think that's a Simpson's quote, who said it? I think it was Krusty... :).

Here's a wrap-up:

the volunteer programmers often lack specialized knowledge ... [Stallman] has long believed in free software, uncontrolled by copyrights. (OSS has copyrights, just like everything else). But because of the ban on selling Linux itself, Red Hat is essentially selling related software[...] How come I haven't heard about this ban?

Bah, suits... what can you do? :)
