Foresight Linux 1.2 Released

Foresight Linux 1.2 has been released! Foresight is the first distribution to be released with GNOME 2.18.1, and builds on the success of the Foresight Linux 1.1 release last month.

Foresight Linux features a new default GDM theme, the Linux 2.6.20.6 kernel, Epiphany as the default web browser, Thunderbird 2.0 (RC2) email client, and more.

The Foresight Linux Project is pleased to announce it's 1.1 release. Most notable update since 1.0.1 is GNOME 2.18.0. For more information, check out the news page.

Also we are very excited to provide Live Demos of GNOME 2.18 for the GNOME project. There are VMware, QEMU/Parrallels, MS Virtual PC, and LiveCD demos available here.

Foresight Linux, the distribution for those who like living on GNOME's cutting edge, has just been updated. One of the distro's lead developers, Antonio Meireles, announced last week that the latest Foresight 0.9.8.2 is now available.

Linux XP Desktop released.

A Russian based company has released the first english edition of their "Linux XP Desktop" which contains a version of GNOME modified to look like WinXP. Looks like the source code modifications are available on a overloaded FTP server, but binary versions are only available on a trial basis.

PenguinTV 0.80 Released

PenguinTV is a full-featured RSS, podcast, and video blog reading tool written in Python. It can be used by itself to download and view media, or you can copy the media files and a ready-made playlist to a portable mp3 player.

Version 0.80 is a major upgrade, with lots of new features and bugfixes. Look for feed filters, faster redraws, better error messages, and drag and drop subscription.

Sysprof 1.0 Released

Version 1.0 of the Sysprof Linux Profiler has been released. Download version 1.0 here, and read the release notes here.

Sysprof is a CPU profiler that uses a Linux kernel module to profile the entire system as it runs. The call graph can be browsed easily with the GTK+ based graphical interface (screenshot).

The developers of VLOS, a Gentoo-based distribution formerly known as Vidalinux, have released two new development versions for testing. Version 1.2.1-rc1: New vlos-1.2.1-rc1 is available for download, this is a bug fixes release of VLOS 1.2. Bug fixes and changes since 1.2: kernel panic fixed and new kernel 2.6.13 included; Anaconda installer updated; AbiWord now part of VLOS download edition; Nautilus crash fixed; NVIDIA and ATI drivers included; MBR bug fixed. Version 1.3-alpha0: Our staff is going crazy with GNOME 2.12 and celebrating this awesome release of our main desktop we announced a pre-alpha version of the next version of VLOS schedule to be released in January 2006.

BibShelf 1.1 Released

BibShelf is a book organizer with a GUI that has certain similarities to the "Muine" music player. BibShelf is a lightweight and feature-poor application and will probably ever be.

The release focus was adding the most important missing features and GUI polish as well. It is now pretty feature complete, as in "everything that was initially planned has been implemented".

Interview with Jeff Waugh On Ubuntu Linux

The Debian-based Ubuntu Linux was unveiled today and a preview release is available for download. Ubuntu uses Gnome 2.8, kernel 2.6.8.1, OOo 1.1.2 and comes with a text-based, but dead-easy, installation procedure. Ubuntu has disabled the root user (sudo is used, same way as OSX does it) and it endorses the "less is more" philosophy. There are still bugs on the preview release, but the team welcomes feedback via their mailing list.

gmodconfig 0.6 released

gmodconfig aims to provide a simple way for end-users to download, install, configure and update Linux kernel modules, in the language of their choosing, through an easy-to-use graphic interface.

This release provides the core of gmodconfig as a Bonobo control. On Linux this enables applications to easily provide a driver configuration and installation interface to their users.

gmodconfig aims to provide a simple way for end-users to download, install, configure and update Linux kernel modules, in the language of their choosing, through an easy-to-use graphic interface.
This version provides GUI improvements, and supports kernel 2.6 modules. The DKMS package installer has been improved to support both tarballs and RPMs. The kernel modules metadata (XML files) used by gmodconfig are now released separately in the gmodconfig-data package.
